I just watched Multiply and was so overwhelmed with emotion! The film so beautifully expressed the journey of last year and even what’s happened since.
— Multiply - The Film Audience Response

Directed by Rhys Graham (Galore, MIFF 2013), Multiply revisits the 400-person-strong dance event held in November 2020 at inner-suburban Melbourne’s Prahran Square, which was staged as an artistic response to social isolation. Tracing the weeks prior to the performance, including footage of staggered rehearsals and masked studio visits, alongside discursive commentary from dancers and Lake herself, Multiply demonstrates the intimacy and impact of choreography on the commons in a time of heightened disconnection.

MULTIPLY

Multiply is a mass contemporary dance event choreographed by Stephanie Lake and composed by audio-visual artist Robin Fox for Melbourne Fringe 2020. Multiply invited all citizens of Melbourne to sign up and take part, regardless of skill or ability.

Multiply is a timely artistic response to social isolation in 2020. Four hundred participants shook off the shackles of isolation, dancing fully masked in designated spaces two metres apart, in Prahran Square on Saturday 28, November 2020. With no audience on site, the work was made with and for participants, who learned the simple choreography from twenty dance leaders. The work was filmed with stunning drone photography by Daybreak Films, with the film being released in 2021.
